The Golden Pin

This Canadian short film made by Vietnamese director Cuong Ngo would be a nice surprise in the queer themed movie landscape of 2009.

So far this year, The Golden Pin is the third movie made by Vietnamese-born directors with a gay/lesbian theme. The first feature is Sad Fish by Le Van Kiet, a young director who grew up in the US. Sad Fish had a World Premiere earlier this year at the Vietnamese International Film Festival in Irvine. The second one - Adrift by Bui Thac Chuyen, the acclaimed director who represents a new generation of filmmaking in Vietnam, will premiere in Venice this weekend.

The Golden Pin is a modern short dramatic film about a young Vietnamese-Canadian swimmer who struggles between the expectations of his family and the demands of his heart. Told with honesty and compassion, the film asks 'Is love more powerful than fate?'

The film had its World Premiere at the Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film & Video Festival in May 2009 and won the Colin Campbell jury award for Best Canadian Short. It seems to be a festival darling around America, Canada and Europe this year and in the following year as well.
